Winning with a twin strike force, but Vietnam needs more than two centre-forwards

The image that lingers from the final in Bangkok is not a goal, but the moment Nguyen Xuan Son lay on the turf holding his ankle, with the entire Vietnam bench falling into silence. Vietnam won the 2026 ASEAN Championship, largely thanks to Son and Nguyen Tien Linh. Son won the Golden Boot, Tien Linh had won it in an earlier edition, and together they supplied most of Vietnam's goals. But the deeper question is not whether they are talented; it is whether Vietnam has a credible plan when one of them is absent. When Son left the final, the team struggled to create clear chances in the penalty area. Substitutes were mostly wide players or young talents without the instincts of a real centre-forward. The system worked because the two strikers complemented each other: Son could hold the ball and drag defenders out of position, while Tien Linh moved smartly into space. Remove one of them, and the attacking structure lost its finishing point. This is not just a tactical issue, it is a developmental issue. Vietnam cannot rely on two ageing forwards forever. The real task is to train and trust a new generation of strikers, to build more attacking routes, and to ensure that the next champion will not be built on the fragility of a twin-striker dependency.
