When Every Number Is N/A: The Data Problem of Vietnamese Volleyball

A nine-dimensional analysis report landed on my desk last week with all the structure of a professional sports document: tactical sophistication, reception-system support, personnel fit, key data, competition format, risk assessment, expectations. Under every column was the same label: N/A. Insufficient information. In Vietnamese volleyball, this lack of baseline data has become a familiar default. Success on the SEA Games podium has not created an analytics culture. Tactical preparation still runs on eyewitness impressions and lucky intuition. Injury prevention waits until an athlete cries out in pain. Talent identification depends on a coach happening to attend a match, not on measurable output. I am not saying data replaces the human eye. But intuition must be checked with evidence. A data culture does not require expensive technology at the start. It requires discipline, notebooks, synchronized video, and officials who accept written records. Without standard metrics, matches remain untestable, referees stay inconsistent, and young talents keep depending on fate. Vietnamese volleyball does not lack passion. It lacks the will to document. If we cannot measure, we cannot improve. The next goal should be a minimum match report for every national-league game. Until then, every N/A is not a blank box - it is a diagnosis of a system that trusts memory more than evidence.
