Alec Peters: Olympiacos was the most important decision of my life, but Armani Milan is the step I need

This summer, as Olympiacos entered a period of squad transition, one of the names leaving Piraeus was Alec Peters. For European basketball fans, Peters over the last four seasons has been associated with the image of a versatile power forward, someone who moves intelligently, shoots from long range and does not avoid contact. But sitting in front of Armani Milan's cameras, Peters did not want to dwell on statistics or old titles. He wanted to talk about a decision that changed everything. The 31-year-old American joined Armani Milan during this summer transfer window after his contract with Olympiacos expired. Speaking on the Italian club's media channel, Peters praised his former club while explaining why he chose a new challenge rather than staying with a team that continues to operate at the highest level of the EuroLeague. "Two years at Baskonia prepared me to understand what it means to be a key player, an important piece of the team. I felt I had experienced everything, to the point where I could step on the court and play any position. At that time, Olympiacos was building something that, as we have seen over the last four years, has remained at a consistently high level. I liked the playing style, the philosophy, the coach, the system and the atmosphere the club created. I wanted to be part of it," Peters said. Notably, Peters did not hide his original intention upon arriving in Piraeus. He admitted he planned to spend only one year at Olympiacos to test his role, but things exceeded expectations. "I did not intend to stay for four years. My plan was to stay one year and see how it went, whether the role suited me or not. In the end, it proved to be the most important decision of my life — in basketball, for my family, for everything," the former Baskonia forward added. During the 2026-24 season, Peters had a bigger role at Olympiacos after Sasha Vezenkov moved to the Sacramento Kings and Kostas Sloukas left the team. He viewed that period as the moment he had to step out of his comfort zone. "Honestly, there were not big expectations that season, because besides Vezenkov, Sloukas also left. But I was ready. At that moment I knew there were not many players better than me in my position. Reaching the Final Four was another fundamental step in my career. I felt I no longer had to prove anything. I was myself, and I had reached the point where I could go on the court ready to win anything," Peters stressed. The feeling of having "nothing left to prove" was the turning point that made Peters listen to new offers. He chose Armani Milan not because he wanted to leave a weak team, but because he wanted a bigger role, a project he could help build from the ground up. "My arrival in Milan was being prepared for much longer than people think. I noticed how many players I respect had played here — Kyle, Rodriguez, Bryant Dunston, a very good friend of mine from my time in Istanbul. Players often talk to each other about clubs, cities, who is developing, what they are doing. When they told me about Milan, or whenever I played against Armani, I could see the potential. I imagined myself coming here, developing and succeeding. So I said: let's see if there is a possibility, or not. In the end, that interest proved mutual. We want to improve and grow together," Peters explained. He also used the image of a map to describe his decision-making, an interesting way of framing things for a player used to moving between different basketball environments. "With my contract about to expire, my agent and I decided to explore something different, a more important role. I looked around as if I were looking at a map, and Milan kept appearing. Eventually, the interest was mutual. We want to get better together," the former Olympiacos forward said. For Peters, joining Armani Milan is not simply about changing jerseys. He sees it as a long-term project and admits the challenge may be bigger than joining a club that is already ready to win. "I wanted to come here and be part of building the team. This is a project, part of a development process, where I contribute all the experience I gained by playing in good teams and winning a lot, but within an environment where great things have been achieved in the past. I know Armani can become a top-level team, and being part of that process is very encouraging. Of course, achieving this is harder than joining a great team that is already winning, with a roster built to fit. But I wanted something that, psychologically, physically and overall, represents the most important step of my career," Peters concluded. From the outside, the separation between Peters and Olympiacos shows no sign of conflict. He speaks about his old club with respect, about the past with gratitude, but he is also clear about not wanting to remain in his comfort zone. That illustrates a player who has matured tactically and mentally. Peters no longer needs to prove he was worthy of Olympiacos, because he did that over four years. What he now wants to prove is that he can be the centre of a new project, in a new country and with a different style of play. At 31, a power forward can still have some peak seasons ahead. Armani Milan have at times been one of the most ambitious clubs in the EuroLeague, but they are also going through a period of rebuilding their roster. Bringing in a player who started for a team that regularly reached the Final Four is a clear signal of ambition. As for Peters, he will not only be measured by points or wins, but by how far the Italian side can go with him as a leader.
